period costume, explore toys of the past and participate
in 19th century parlour games. A toy making activity enhances
the program experience.

"Native Life Badge"
Joseph Brant Museum
Beavers will explore the traditional life of the Iroquois people through a hands-on discovery of artifacts and an in-house mural. They will create either a clay coil pot or a clan pendant, and receive an activity booklet to take home.

"World Around Me Keeper Badge"
Joseph Brant Museum
Sparks will discover the world of the Iroquois people through hands on activities and displays. They will complete a traditional Aboriginal craft: a clan pendant or a clay coil pot. This program can be incorporated into our Winterfest program which explores cultural celebrations. Some of the diverse cultures examined are: Iroquois Mid-Winter Festival, Chinese Sun Nin, Italy’s La Befana, Sweden’s St. Lucia, Mexican Posadas, Jewish Hanukah, African-American Kwanza, etc.

"Key To My Community: Heritage"
Ireland House at Oakridge Farm
Brownies will tour Ireland House to learn about the Ireland Family as part of Burlington’s history. Brownies will learn about early settlement and the industry and development of Burlington. Each Brownie will receive a heritage booklet to take home and complete a traditional pioneer craft, a corn husk doll.

"Key To My Community: Interest Badge – Aboriginal People In Canada"

Explore the traditional ways of the Iroquois people in this region and the various changes they encountered with the introduction of white settlers through various activities: hands-on artifacts, a Native game, examine Native symbols and their meaning, and create a voyageur pouch. Brownies will also have time to explore the Museum. This completes all 5 of the requirements for this badge.

Brownies will make three different crafts to complete their badge requirements. They will have the option of sculpting in clay, making an aboriginal craft and making a corn husk paper craft. Brownies will also have time to explore the museum after the craft program is complete

Heritage Badge"

At Ireland House, each Cub will complete four of the requirements for this badge. During
their visit, the Cubs will tour part of the museum, learn
a Canadian folklore tale, complete a simple map of Canada,
and take home a Jumping Jack puppet toy.

Cubs will tour the Ireland House to view and discuss
toys and handicrafts of the 19th century. Each
Cub will complete your choice of either a buzz saw from
odds and ends or a tin punch ornament or a wooden toy.

Awareness Badge"

Cubs explore traditional Iroquois life through a hands-on
exercise with artifacts. They will also discover what happened
to the traditional way of life of the Iroquois people once
the Europeans arrived on the continent. The Cubs will make
a Voyageur pouch to take home.

An introduction to toy making and a partial tour of the
museum to view relevant artifacts are included in this program.
The Guide leader will choose, ahead of time, one of these
historic toys to be completed: a heritage doll or a corn husk
doll.

Ireland House at Oakridge Farm
Guides will receive a tour of Ireland House, one of the earliest buildings in the community and discover how the first settlers lived. Each guide will learn how Ontario and Burlington received their names, learn a traditional song and poem, and receive a Heritage Book to begin a heritage project at home. Guides will also participate in a heritage cooking demonstration. This completes 5 of the 6 components needed for the badge.

Guides learn of the importance of storytelling to the Iroquois
people, both as a way of communicating and as a way of preserving
history. They will hear "The Legend of the Dreamkeeper"
and participate in making a dreamcatcher craft.

Guides will discover how the Iroquois people lived in the
area several hundred years ago through a hands-on exercise
with artifacts, and understand what happened once Europeans
arrived. Joseph Brant and his involvement with the founding
of Burlington will be discussed. The Guides will hear the
Iroquois legend, "The Importance of Corn", and
participate in making a traditional Iroquois craft -- corn
husk dolls.

Pathfinders will complete three requirements for the Heritage section. The Pathfinder Unit will tour the museum, discovering the role Ireland House at Oakridge Farm played in the early community. Each participant will learn about early street names, toys/games, learn to use a drop spindle, and make butter using pioneer methods.
