Lucie Marie Ireland.(226) Born on September
14, 1923, Marie was the only child of George Naisbett Ireland and Lucy Davis
(Springer) Ireland. Although everyone refers to her as Marie, she was baptized
Lucie Marie, at St John's Anglican Church on #5 Hwy.
Marie's education began at the Public School at S.S #5, Nelson, situated on the
Guelph Line just north of #5 Hwy. In the fall of 1936, she started at Burlington
High School, graduating in 1941. She then went to McMaster University, from
1941-1942. Instead of returning to McMaster, she went to Teachers' College,
and upon graduation accepted a position in the Public School at Moffatt.
Marie returned to McMaster in 1946, and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of
Arts degree. She held teaching positions in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) from
1948-1949, and Ottawa from 1949-1963, returning home that year to be married
at St John's Church. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce. While living
at Oakridge Farm, she taught at Ryerson Public School in Hamilton from 1965 until
her retirement from teaching in 1977.
Oral History - When Marie was 15 years old, her mother died.. Marie wore total
black, reminiscent of Victorian times, and her social life virtually ground to
a halt. The mourning continued more or less until she left for University.
Together with her cousins Garnet and Evelyn Ireland, she travelled to England
to gather and document information on the history of Ireland family and put
together the family tree which is now in the reception area.
From 1972, when her father died, until her death in 1985 Marie lived in the house.
A few years after George' s death, her cousin Allan Ireland and his wife Joan
came to live with her and help care for the property.
Marie became ill in January of 1985 and died on September 28, 1985.
Her dream to preserve Ireland House as a museum was passed on to her cousin Helen
Ireland Caldwell. As executor of Maries' estate, Helen worked tirelessly to
ensure that Marie's wish for a family museum was finally realized. Credit must
also be given to the Burlington Historical Society for all their continued hard
work.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Marie had a very competitive nature, winning was very
important to Marie. As a child she was enthusiastic about animals and enjoyed
the challenges of the outdoors. At a young age, Marie started driving the tractor,
became an expert horsewoman and loved all aspects of the farm and took piano
lessons.
- George took Lucy's death very hard, annd imposed long periods of mourning on
Marie, and she was made to wear black.
- MARIE LOVED LIFE
- At the age of 16, Marie got her driverrs license. Although she was considered
an excellent driver, she was aggressive and fast.
- As an adult, Marie was very involved iin the community, belonging to organizations
such as the Historical Society, the Garden Club, the Teachers' Federation and
St John's Anglican Church.
- She loved parties, both other peoples and her own, and any excuse was used
for a party.
- She has a passion for horse races, lovved games and enjoyed TV game shows.
