Stroke Proves Fatal at Milford Home
Gary friends and former associates learned today of the sudden death
of Charles H. Ireland, former Gary division superintendent of the Elgin, Joliet
and Eastern railroad.
Ireland succumbed last night to the effects of a cerebral hemorrhage
suffered in his residence in Milford, Ind., near Lake Wawasee, where he had lived
most of the time since his retirement from the "J" March 23, 1944.
He was 77 years old.
So far as known, his only survivors are the widow and a daughter, Mrs.
William A. Perry, who lives at 436 McKinley in Gary. Mrs. Perry's husband is
assistant general superintendent of the Inland Steel Co.'s Indiana Harbor works.
Another daughter, Mrs. W.H. Taylor, wife of a Presbyterian cleric formerly
residing in Homewood, Ill., died several years ago.
Railroader for 55 years
Funeral arrangements were incomplete, but it was expected that details
would be announced tomorrow.
Ireland had been 55 years a railroader when, on his 70th birthday in
11943, he relinquished the helm of the "J"'s Kirk yard to A.F. Carshner.
He had headed the railroad's Gary division from March 25, 1936, when he succeeded
the late Charles H. Doorley, who in turn had held the post for 20 years.
Born in Nelson, Ont., Ireland began his long career in South Chicago
in November, 1888, as night ticket clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later,
he was employed by the B. & O., the Belt railway and the Chicago Car Service
association.
Joined "J" in 1895
In 1892 he went to work for the Calumet Terminal Traffic Co., now the
B. and O.C.T. His services with the "J" dated from Jan. 25, 1895,
when he was employed by the C. and B. I. and C.L.S. and E. railway, now a part
of the "J" system. He remained with these lines until mid-November,
1908, when he was appointed night general yardmaster of the "J".
He was advanced to general yardmaster in Gary on March 1, 1914, and on
April 1, two years later, moved up to the post of trainmaster, which he held
until he replaced Doorley as Gary division superintendent in early 1936.
During their later years in Gary, Ireland and his wife lived at 436 McKinley.
Ireland was prominent in Masonry during his active years, holding membership
in Gary chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Orak Shrine, the Fort Wayne consistory,
and South Chicago lodge, F. and A.M.
He died about 1950 in Milford, Indiana, U.S.A..

"Funeral services for C. H. (Bert) Ireland, 77, of Milford, will
be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Ireland residence in Milford, with Rev. W.I.
Duker in charge. The Mishler funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ireland, former rail road man, died Tuesday evening following an
illness of a few weeks, due to complications.
Surviving relatives include his wife, the former Hattie Bartholomew;
one daughter, Mrs. William Perry, of Gary,; two granddaughters; one grandson
and two great-grand-daughters.
