School Programs

 All school programs are designed and consulted with the Ontario Board of Education Curriculum. Our aim is to provide a fun and educational experience for your students within the curriculum guidelines. Each program can be customized to meet your specific needs. Please let us know how we can help you!

 

 

 Booking Procedure

Programs should be booked at least four weeks in advance to ensure your choice of date is available. Please note that when booking groups of 40 or more children, we request that the program time be extended to 2.5 hours.  This ensures that all students receive a quality, hands-on program. Confirmation of booking will be sent in advance of the program. When arriving by bus at Joseph Brant Museum, please park in our lot in the designated area.

 

Book a day trip and experience both Museums for a Special Rate! Have your lunch in the Museum or picnic on our grounds! (Approximately 4 4.5 hours)

SAVE THE DATE, TEACHERS!

 

This summer the Museums of Burlington will be hosting Teacher Days on August 1, 2012 at Ireland House Museum and on August 2, 2012 at Joseph Brant Museum beginning at 1pm on both days. All teachers can come out to celebrate your profession and learn about our many heritage programs, as well as opportunities to tour the museums! Refreshments from our hearth will also be available and teachers will receive a free heritage tote bag! 

 

ATTENTION ALL TEACHERS!! FREE admission to the Museums of Burlington for the month of August, just show your ID!  

 

 

PROGRAMS


 
EARLY SETTLEMENT

 
Look back at the early settlers to the Burlington area and discover their Pioneer traditions and way of life in our Shoreline Gallery. Native peoples of the area are also explored through the Joseph Brant artifacts. Creating a traditional Native craft, rounds out the program.

Grades 2 and 3. Curriculum Connection: Heritage and Citizenship, Canada and World Connections
    
Half day: (1.5-2 hours)
 

FIRST CONTACT


Students examine the interactions between the Native people and the European people at the time of first contact. This program includes various explorers and eras including the Vikings, the French and the British leading to Colonial Canada.

Grade 6. Curriculum Connection: Heritage and Citizenship
    
Half day: (1.5-2 hours)

 

JOSEPH BRANT - THE MAN AND THE MUSEUM


Students will be introduced to Burlington’s first citizen, Joseph Brant. They will have an opportunity to explore the Museum’s artifacts and through a variety of discovery activities learn about Brant's role as the leader of the Six Nations Confederacy and a British Army Captain.

Grades 6-8. Curriculum Connection: Heritage and Citizenship, New France, British North America, Conflict and Change, The Development of Western Canada, Canada a Changing Society

NATIVE LIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT


Through engaging hands-on activities, games, stories and crafts, students will begin to develop an understanding of the Iroquoian relationship with their environment.

Grades 1-8. Curriculum Connection: Heritage and Citizenship, Canada and World Connections, New France, British North America, Conflict and Change, The Development of Western Canada, Canada a Changing Society

WINTERFEST

Seasonal Program (mid-November to December)

Celebrate multiculturalism around the world this winter without leaving our Discovery Gallery.  This inclusive program will allow students to explore a variety of winter celebrations and traditions including, Iroquois Mid-winter Festival, Hanukah, Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, 1920s Christmas, Eid, and much more.  Students will participate in group activities, create take-home crafts and tour the Museum.
